Ship It

Antenna Waves

Finally.  After months of work, I’m able to ship one of my pet projects.  We’re adding a whole new component to the creative community at Save the Artist – a podcast network.  I got hooked on podcasting and soon found that I could coax several of my friends into co-hosting several shows.  Three months ago, I didn’t even own a mic and now I’m recording several shows a week with some of the most creative people I know.

Go check out the new Save the Artist Network.  And forgive me if I relax for the rest of the night now that it’s launched.

Vision and Strategy

“Through the years, I had learned that if you think about strategy (the “how”) too early, it will actually inhibit your vision (the “what”) and block you from thinking as big as you need to think. What you need is a vision that is so big that it is compelling, not only to others, but to you. If it’s not compelling, you won’t have the motivation to stay the course and you won’t be able to recruit others to help you.” – Michael Hyatt

I have a lot of ideas.  I’m one of those guys with a half-dozen notebooks with ideas, sketches, and notes scattered throughout.  I might go through 7 or 17 different versions of an idea to get it right.  And those are just the ones for our creative community at Save the Artist.

No matter how I decide to act on an idea, to execute that strategy as Michael puts it, I also put the focus on the idea itself first.  Because if I don’t love it, there’s no point.  My dreams and plans are big – they require others on my team to help out.  And if I’m not excited and communicating that right, then the idea gets off to a rocky start.

January’s over but the year’s just getting started.  I need to get the idea solid before anything else.  There’s plenty of time left in the year to pull it off.

Too Lazy and Don’t Respect

Too Lazy Don't Respect

Ah tl;dr.  It’s the way commenters try to get away with having an opinion on something without taking a moment to understand the author’s.  A title catches their eye, they skim it really quick, and then make voice their thoughts to the world in the comments section.  It doesn’t matter that this one article might have been weeks of blood, sweat, and tears to make sure the story is told just right. All the tl;dr commenter wants is to show why the author is wrong.

So don’t look for sympathy from me when I skip over that commenter like they don’t exist.  tl;dr is just their way of saying too lazy and don’t respect.

New Car Smell

So after working for months on the new design, we just launched version 2.0 of Save the Artist.  If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s an awesome creative community with photographers, chefs, designers, and every other artist you can imagine involved.  Check it out at www.savetheartist.net

Beyond the Page

Quick note: I’ll refer to it as a radio but I’m also including music CDs, comedy channels, podcasts, live broadcasts, etc.  But exclusively the sound element rather than the visual.

There’s an old story of the natives in Papua, New Guinea experiencing their first encounter with a radio.  They’re first reaction was to demand the see the little man inside of the strange box.  Obsessed by the magic quality to fit a small man into that radio box, the natives called it “Bokis, he cry,” – in English, “the box that cries.”

That’s one way to describe the sound of music and voice coming from that magical box.  But it speaks to the fact that a radio is really an extension of ourselves.  We listen to it in our cars, at work, from our phones, our iPods, etc.  Sure, TV’s and movies are great and who doesn’t love a good book – but there’s something different about hearing a voice through the speakers and reaching out to connect with it.  We share that moment with the person on the other end.

So what spurned out this seemingly random post?  I’ve been doing several podcasts lately and loving them.  Getting to test out different sound setups and learn the tech behind audio gives me a whole new appreciation for the art of sound.  It’s a vital part to telling the story.  We’re going to start using them at Save the Artist to tell more of the story.

What’s your most memorable sound moment?

A new project

So my wife and I (along with several other great artists) have been working on a new project over the past few months.  We’re rolling it out slowly to make sure everything works with the site and such.  Definitely go check it out as soon as you have a moment!
